A small city straddling the Rice County and Dakota County line, Northfield, Minnesota is home to 20,000 residents. It may be small, but Northfield is a powerhouse of a city, active in agriculture, commercial pursuits, and education. Located less than an hour from Minneapolis-St. Paul, it is a major draw for folks who want to work in the city but not necessarily live in it.
Northfield is steeped in history, with the biggest event of the year coming in early September – the “Defeat of Jesse James Days.” Northfield was the location of the failed Northfield Raid that spelled the end for the James gang, and every year, this event is celebrated during the weekend after Labor Day. The festival is one of the largest outdoor celebrations in the state, and it centers around reenactments of the robbery, adding a championship rodeo, a carnival, a car show, and plenty other activities into the mix.
There’s plenty more beyond that, of course. Northfield is home to Carleton College and St. Olaf College, two institutions of higher learning that date back almost 150 years. There’s also over 400 acres of parkland throughout the city, including the Carleton College Cowling Arboretum which is great for walking in the summer or cross-country skiing in the winter.
Only 13 miles south of Northfield is the Rice County seat of Faribault. This is the home of Mike’s Garage, one of the premiere service centers in the region, a place that many of the residents of Northfield take their vehicles to for the best in service and repairs. At Mike’s, we provide in-depth diagnostics, transparent overviews, and affordable solutions for you diesel trucks, hybrid cars, and everything in between.
